Smaller problems (for kids ?)

Go to list of problems

With the onset of the corona-virus restrictions many children are at home from school, mainly doing school work, but also in need of other mental stimulation. To that end I have created a number of simple Sudoku problems and will add more. These were initially created, at my wife’s suggestion, for my grand children ranging from 3 to 11 years in age.

The simplest problem I could conceive of is 4X4, with an example shown below.

This is aimed at a 6 year old but I suspect he will rapidly progress to the 6X6, below

Slightly larger, but still simpler than the 9X9, is the 8X8, shown here in 2 forms.

There are also a few 5X5 problems which are quire challenging and do not really qualify as kid’s problems. Only really added for fun since my son asked me why there were no 5X5, assuming they would be intermediate in difficulty between 4X4 and 6X6. Interestingly these all seem to have the same overall pattern once solved.

For each of the above I’ve added a link at the bottom of the page so you can download several problems as a pdf file for easy printing.
